On 3 October there is a public holiday throughout Germany. It is called “German Unity Day”. In the past there were two German states: East and West. Since 1990 Germany has been one country again. That was 36 years ago. This year the big celebration is in Bremen. Bremen expects more than 400,000 visitors. People are also celebrating in the village of Mödlareuth. The village is very small. In the past there was a wall in the middle of the village. One part was in the East, and the other part was in the West.

3 October is a public holiday throughout Germany: German Unity Day. It commemorates the day in 1990 when Germany became one united state again – 36 years ago.

The official celebration moves to a different federal state every year: the host is the state that currently chairs the Bundesrat. This time it is Bremen, the smallest federal state. A public festival runs there until Sunday, with music, theatre and discussions on more than 100 stages. More than 400,000 visitors are expected.

At the official ceremony, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier warned against extremism, which threatens democracy. But East and West are still not quite equal today, says Elisabeth Kaiser, the federal government’s commissioner for eastern Germany. In the East people earn and own less on average, and East Germans are rare in leadership positions.

Amerikanische Soldaten nannten den Ort „Little Berlin“.

On this day people are also celebrating in the small village of Mödlareuth. One part belongs to Bavaria, the other to Thuringia, and the Tannbach stream flows between them. For 41 years this stream was the border between the GDR and West Germany. In 1966 the GDR built a concrete wall in the middle of the village. American soldiers called the place “Little Berlin”.

In December 1989, a month after the fall of the Berlin Wall, a border crossing for pedestrians opened in the village. A piece of the wall in the village is still standing today and is part of the German-German Museum. Today people walk freely across the stream, but the village still has two postcodes and two dialling codes.
