Ausbildung in der Pflege wird immer beliebter

Nursing training is becoming more and more popular

Ausbildung in der Pflege wird immer beliebter

Based on reporting by tagesschau (ARD). Independently rewritten from the facts into graded German by Mitlesen — not a translation of the original article.

In Germany, more young people want to work in nursing again. They do vocational training. After that, they work as nurses. In 2025, there were almost 64,000 new nursing trainees. That is about eight percent more than the year before. That is what the Federal Statistical Office says. But there are still too few care workers. Germany's population is getting older. That is why Germany will need many care workers in the future too.

In 2025, just under 64,000 people in Germany, most of them young, started training in nursing. That is around eight percent more than the previous year and the third increase in a row, the Federal Statistical Office reports. The nursing school at Ludwigshafen Hospital even received around 4,200 applications for 200 places this year – a record.

By contrast, dual vocational training, for example in the skilled trades, saw 2.8 percent fewer new contracts in 2025. The Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB) sees this as a result of the economic crisis.

Why is nursing so popular? The BIBB gives several reasons: in many health professions, trainees no longer have to pay tuition fees. In addition, many employers take on their trainees as soon as they qualify, often with a permanent contract. And many people consider health professions secure, even in the age of artificial intelligence.

A trainer in Ludwigshafen believes that videos on social media have also made these professions better known. This benefits newer professions such as surgical technologist, whose job is to prepare the operating theatre and assist during operations.

Full-time training to become a nurse takes three years. Half of the new trainees are 21 or younger, and their average age is 24.

One problem remains: nursing schools are short of teachers, and without more teachers the trend cannot continue, the BIBB warns. And despite all the new trainees, there are still far too few care workers because society is ageing.
