Soon your ID card will be on your phone. On 15 October 2026, the Bundestag said yes to a new law. The government app is called “d-you”. It starts on 2 January 2027. With the app, you can show online that it is really you. This is useful, for example, when dealing with the authorities or at the bank. The app costs nothing. You do not have to use it. But the Bundesrat still has to say yes. Then the law takes effect.

Januar 2027 starten. Der Bundesrat muss aber noch zustimmen.

Soon your ID card will be on your phone. On 15 October 2026, the Bundestag passed a new law to make this possible. The government app is called “d-you” and is due to start on 2 January 2027. However, the Bundesrat still has to approve it.

With the app, you can prove who you are online, for example to the authorities, to your bank or when taking out a mobile phone contract. The app is voluntary and free of charge. At first, you can only store your ID card; your driving licence and other documents will follow later.

To use the app, you need a German ID card or an electronic residence permit with the online function, plus a PIN. On ID cards from July 2017 or later, the function is switched on automatically; otherwise, the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) switches it on free of charge.

With this law, Germany is following an EU rule. If a website checks your age, it is only supposed to learn that you are over 18. You can also decide for yourself whether the app stores your passport photo. However, data protection experts criticise the app because it offers few features at first.

Another new rule: anyone who was at least 70 years old when they last applied for an ID card no longer has to renew it. After the expiry date, however, its online function no longer works, and it is better to take a valid ID card when travelling to other EU countries. As a result, the authorities receive about 285,000 fewer applications every year.

Anyone who moves no longer has to have the place of residence in their passport changed, but must still register with the authorities. This means the authorities will have to update about 1.2 million fewer passports.
