Little Red Cap
Rotkäppchen is a short fairy tale about a young girl who always wears a red hooded cap given to her by her grandmother. One day her mother sends her through the forest with food and drink for the sick grandmother.

Das Mädchen trägt die Kappe immer. Darum heißt es Rotkäppchen.
The girl always wore the cap. That is why she was called Little Red Cap.
Eines Tages spricht die Mutter. Sie gibt Rotkäppchen Kuchen und Wein.
One day the mother spoke. She gave Little Red Cap cake and wine.
Das ist für die kranke Großmutter. Die Mutter sagt: „Bleib auf dem Weg!“
It was for the sick grandmother. The mother said: “Stay on the path!”
Die Großmutter wohnt im Wald. Rotkäppchen geht in den Wald.

Rotkäppchen hat keine Angst. Es kennt den bösen Wolf nicht.
Little Red Cap was not afraid. She did not know the wicked wolf.
Der Wolf fragt: „Wohin gehst du?“ Rotkäppchen sagt: „Zur Großmutter.“
The wolf asked: “Where are you going?” Little Red Cap said: “To grandmother.”
Der Wolf ist böse und hat Hunger. Er will Rotkäppchen und die Großmutter fressen.
The wolf was wicked and hungry. He wanted to eat Little Red Cap and the grandmother.
Der Wolf hat eine Idee. Er sagt: „Hier sind schöne Blumen.“
The wolf had an idea. He said: “Here are pretty flowers.”
Rotkäppchen will Blumen für die Großmutter. Es geht vom Weg weg und sucht Blumen.
Little Red Cap wanted flowers for the grandmother. She left the path and looked for flowers.
Der Wolf geht schnell zum Haus. Er klopft an die Tür.
The wolf went quickly to the house. He knocked on the door.
Es war einmal ein kleines, liebes Mädchen. Alle Leute mochten es sehr.
Once upon a time there was a small, sweet girl. All the people liked her very much.
Am meisten hat es seine Großmutter geliebt. Die Großmutter hat ihm oft etwas geschenkt.
She loved her grandmother most of all. The grandmother often gave her presents.
Einmal hat sie ihm ein Käppchen aus rotem Stoff gemacht. Das Mädchen hat das rote Käppchen immer getragen.
Once she made her a little cap from red cloth. The girl always wore the red cap.
Deshalb haben die Leute es nur noch Rotkäppchen genannt.
That is why people only called her Little Red Cap.
Eines Tages hat die Mutter gesagt: „Rotkäppchen, deine Großmutter ist krank.“ „Bring ihr bitte diesen Kuchen und eine Flasche Wein.“
One day the mother said: “Little Red Cap, your grandmother is sick.” “Please bring her this cake and a bottle of wine.”
Die Mutter hat auch gesagt: „Geh bitte direkt zur Großmutter. Und bleib immer auf dem Weg im Wald.“
The mother also said: “Please go straight to grandmother. And always stay on the path in the forest.”
Rotkäppchen hat gesagt, dass es vorsichtig sein wird. Dann ist es losgegangen.
Little Red Cap said that she would be careful. Then she set off.
Das Haus der Großmutter war im Wald. Es war ungefähr eine halbe Stunde vom Dorf entfernt.
The grandmother’s house was in the forest. It was about half an hour from the village.
Als Rotkäppchen in den Wald gekommen ist, hat es einen Wolf getroffen.
When Little Red Cap came into the forest, she met a wolf.
Rotkäppchen wusste nicht, dass der Wolf gefährlich ist. Deshalb hatte es keine Angst.
Little Red Cap did not know that the wolf was dangerous. That is why she was not afraid.
Der Wolf hat Rotkäppchen freundlich begrüßt. Er hat gefragt, wohin es geht.
The wolf greeted Little Red Cap in a friendly way. He asked where she was going.
Rotkäppchen hat geantwortet, dass es seine kranke Großmutter besucht. Es bringt ihr Kuchen und Wein.
Little Red Cap answered that she was visiting her sick grandmother. She was bringing her cake and wine.
Dann hat der Wolf gefragt, wo das Haus der Großmutter ist. Rotkäppchen hat es ihm genau erklärt.
Then the wolf asked where the grandmother’s house was. Little Red Cap explained it to him exactly.
Der Wolf hatte einen bösen Plan. Er wollte die Großmutter und Rotkäppchen fressen.
The wolf had a wicked plan. He wanted to eat the grandmother and Little Red Cap.
Der Wolf hat zu Rotkäppchen gesagt: „Sieh nur die schönen Blumen hier im Wald.“
The wolf said to Little Red Cap: “Just look at the pretty flowers here in the forest.”
Es war einmal ein süßes kleines Mädchen, das alle Leute sehr mochten. Besonders ihre Großmutter liebte sie sehr und schenkte ihr viele Dinge.
Once upon a time there was a sweet little girl whom everyone liked very much. Her grandmother in particular loved her dearly and gave her many things.
Einmal bekam das Mädchen von ihr ein Käppchen aus rotem Samt. Weil es ihr so gut stand und sie es immer tragen wollte, nannten sie alle nur noch Rotkäppchen.
Once she received a little cap of red velvet from her. Because it suited her so well and she always wanted to wear it, everyone called her only Little Red Cap.
Eines Tages bat die Mutter Rotkäppchen, der kranken Großmutter Kuchen und Wein zu bringen. Das Essen sollte der Großmutter helfen, wieder gesund und stark zu werden.
One day the mother asked Little Red Cap to bring cake and wine to her sick grandmother. The food was supposed to help the grandmother get healthy and strong again.
Die Mutter sagte auch: „Geh bitte direkt zur Großmutter und bleib auf dem Weg im Wald. Sei vorsichtig, damit du nicht hinfällst und die Flasche zerbricht.“
The mother also said: “Please go straight to grandmother and stay on the path in the forest. Be careful so that you don’t fall and break the bottle.”
Rotkäppchen versprach ihrer Mutter, vorsichtig zu sein und alles richtig zu machen.
Little Red Cap promised her mother to be careful and to do everything right.
Das Haus der Großmutter stand mitten im Wald, ungefähr eine halbe Stunde vom Dorf entfernt. Als Rotkäppchen durch den Wald ging, traf sie plötzlich den Wolf.
The grandmother’s house stood in the middle of the forest, about half an hour from the village. As Little Red Cap walked through the forest, she suddenly met the wolf.
Das Mädchen wusste nicht, dass Wölfe gefährlich sein können. Deshalb hatte sie überhaupt keine Angst vor ihm.
The girl did not know that wolves can be dangerous. That is why she was not afraid of him at all.
„Guten Tag, Rotkäppchen“, sagte der Wolf freundlich. Er fragte sie, wohin sie geht und was sie in ihrem Korb trägt.
“Good day, Little Red Cap,” said the wolf in a friendly voice. He asked her where she was going and what she was carrying in her basket.
Rotkäppchen erzählte ihm von ihrer kranken Großmutter. Sie erklärte, dass sie ihr Kuchen und Wein bringt, damit sie sich besser fühlt.
Little Red Cap told him about her sick grandmother. She explained that she was bringing her cake and wine so that she would feel better.
Sie verriet dem Wolf sogar, wo das Haus der Großmutter steht: bei drei großen Eichenbäumen.
She even revealed to the wolf where the grandmother’s house was: by three big oak trees.
Der Wolf dachte bei sich: „Dieses junge Mädchen ist eine leichte Beute und schmeckt sicher besser als die alte Frau. Mit einem klugen Plan kann ich vielleicht beide fressen.“
The wolf thought to himself: “This young girl is easy prey and surely tastes better than the old woman. With a clever plan I can perhaps eat both.”
Der Wolf hatte eine Idee und sagte: „Rotkäppchen, sieh dir doch die schönen Blumen an und hör den Vögeln zu. Es ist so schön hier im Wald.“
The wolf had an idea and said: “Little Red Cap, just look at the pretty flowers and listen to the birds. It is so beautiful here in the forest.”
Es gab einmal ein süßes kleines Mädchen, das von allen geliebt wurde, die es kannten. Besonders ihre Großmutter liebte sie sehr und wusste oft nicht, was sie ihr alles schenken sollte. Eines Tages bekam das Mädchen von ihr ein Käppchen aus rotem Samt. Weil ihr dieses rote Käppchen so gut stand und sie es immer tragen wollte, wurde sie von allen nur noch Rotkäppchen genannt.
There once was a sweet little girl who was loved by everyone who knew her. Her grandmother in particular loved her very much and often did not know what else to give her. One day the girl received a little cap of red velvet from her. Because this red cap suited her so well and she always wanted to wear it, everyone called her only Little Red Cap.
Eines Tages bat die Mutter Rotkäppchen: „Nimm diesen Kuchen und eine Flasche Wein und bring sie zu deiner Großmutter. Sie ist krank und schwach, und eine kleine Stärkung wird ihr guttun. Beeil dich, bevor es zu heiß wird, und verlass im Wald auf keinen Fall den Weg, sonst könntest du hinfallen. Sei auch höflich, wenn du bei ihr ankommst.“
One day the mother asked Little Red Cap: “Take this cake and a bottle of wine and bring them to your grandmother. She is sick and weak, and a little refreshment will do her good. Hurry up before it gets too hot, and on no account leave the path in the forest, otherwise you might fall. Be polite, too, when you arrive at her place.”
Rotkäppchen versprach ihrer Mutter, auf alles zu achten, und machte sich auf den Weg. Die Großmutter wohnte etwa eine halbe Stunde vom Dorf entfernt, mitten im Wald. Als Rotkäppchen den Wald betrat, traf sie auf einen Wolf.
Little Red Cap promised her mother to be careful about everything and set off. The grandmother lived about half an hour from the village, in the middle of the forest. When Little Red Cap entered the forest, she came across a wolf.
Da sie nicht wusste, dass Wölfe gefährliche Tiere sein können, hatte sie keine Angst vor ihm. „Guten Tag, Rotkäppchen“, sagte der Wolf freundlich. „Wohin gehst du denn?“
Since she did not know that wolves can be dangerous animals, she was not afraid of him. “Good day, Little Red Cap,” said the wolf in a friendly voice. “Where are you going then?”
„Ich bin auf dem Weg zu meiner Großmutter“, antwortete sie. Der Wolf fragte neugierig, was sie in ihrem Korb habe. Rotkäppchen erklärte ihm, dass sie ihrer kranken Großmutter Kuchen und Wein bringe, und verriet ihm sogar naiv, wo genau die Großmutter wohnte.
“I am on my way to my grandmother,” she answered. The wolf asked curiously what she had in her basket. Little Red Cap explained that she was bringing cake and wine to her sick grandmother, and even naively told him exactly where the grandmother lived.
Der Wolf dachte bei sich, dass dieses junge Mädchen eine köstliche Mahlzeit wäre, sogar noch besser als die alte Frau. Er schmiedete einen listigen Plan, um beide zu fressen. Er ging ein Stück neben ihr her und sagte: „Schau doch mal, Rotkäppchen, all die schönen Blumen hier im Wald. Du läufst ja so zielstrebig, als wärst du auf dem Weg zur Schule.“
The wolf thought to himself that this young girl would be a delicious meal, even better than the old woman. He came up with a cunning plan to eat both of them. He walked alongside her for a while and said: “Just look, Little Red Cap, at all the pretty flowers here in the forest. You walk so purposefully, as if you were on your way to school.”
