Das Brot vom Bäcker

The Bread from the Baker

Das Brot vom Bäcker

Tobias, 35, runs Bäckerei Krause in a small town. Every Saturday for twelve years, Frau Weber (78) has come at 7:30 for four Roggenbrötchen and one Laugenbrezel. He always has them ready. One Saturday, she doesn't come. Nor the next. He worries but doesn't know where she lives. On the third Saturday, a younger woman walks in: “Ich hätte gerne Mamas Bestellung.” Frau Weber is in the hospital. Tobias packs extra Brötchen, waves off the money. The daughter keeps coming — six Brötchen now, because she visits Mama every Saturday.

Tobias has worked for twelve years at the Krause Bakery, which sits on a quiet street. Every morning he gets up at four o'clock to prepare the rolls. That is his life, and he loves it.

Every Saturday, Frau Weber comes to the bakery. She is seventy-eight years old and always arrives punctually at seven thirty. She wears a dark blue coat, and her hair is white.

She has been ordering the same thing for twelve years: four rye rolls and one pretzel. Tobias has the order ready before she even speaks. He smiles, and Frau Weber smiles back.

„Guten Morgen, Frau Weber.“

“Good morning, Frau Weber.”

„Guten Morgen, Herr Tobias. Kalt heute.“

“Good morning, Mr. Tobias. Cold today.”

„Ja, aber das Brot ist warm.“

“Yes, but the bread is warm.”

That is their little ritual, which has lasted twelve years now.

One Saturday, Frau Weber does not come. Tobias waits and keeps glancing at the clock. Quarter to eight, eight, half past eight — but she does not come. In the end, he puts the rolls back on the shelf and thinks that maybe she is sick or has visitors.

The next Saturday, he again sets aside four rye rolls and one pretzel. He waits, but she does not come again.

Tobias slowly grows nervous. He does not know where Frau Weber lives, and he doesn't have her phone number either. He only knows her name and her dark blue coat.
