Aldi und Lidl streiten über Rabatt-Apps

Based on reporting by Tagesschau. Independently rewritten from the facts into graded German by Mitlesen — not a translation of the original article.

Aldi is advertising in Germany. The discounter says: You do not need an app for low prices. The price on the shelf is the same for all customers. You do not need a phone or coupons. You also do not have to give any data. Lidl is answering the advertisement. Lidl thinks its own app is good. The app is called Lidl Plus. About 65 percent of Germans have an app from a shop. But not everyone uses it often.

Anyone who wants to save money at the supermarket often needs a smartphone today. You download an app, activate coupons and pass on data in return. Aldi has been advertising against exactly that for weeks, with low prices and no bonus app. The price on the shelf should apply to everyone.

Aldi Süd boss Simon Gelzer says good food should stay affordable for everyone. According to a study by NIQ, around 65 percent of Germans have a retailer app. But by no means all of them use it regularly.

Stephan Rüschen is a professor of retail in Heilbronn. He says many programmes are too complicated, because every shop requires its own app. For older people or people with a visual impairment this is hard. Some customers find it unfair that users with an app pay less.

Lidl mocked Aldi online, saying it splits Germany into North and South and still talks about one price for everyone. Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd really are separate companies. Prices can therefore differ from region to region, above all for fresh goods. Aldi points to its own brands: over 90 percent of the range.

Lidl stresses that the regular prices apply everywhere and also without an app. Lidl Plus is only an extra offer with discounts and free items.

Rüschen sees no evidence that apps push prices up overall. But there are fewer and fewer offers in the printed leaflets. Anyone who does not use an app is at a disadvantage. All the same, Rüschen expects Aldi to succeed. In Belgium, though, customers collect points with the Aldi app.
