Wenig Wasser in den Flüssen: Lkw dürfen sonntags fahren

States lift the Sunday lorry ban as rivers run dry

Wenig Wasser in den Flüssen: Lkw dürfen sonntags fahren

Based on reporting by tagesschau (ARD). Independently rewritten from the facts into graded German by Mitlesen — not a translation of the original article.

The Rhine and the Elbe currently have very little water. It is very dry in Germany. Ships can therefore only transport a little. Large lorries are normally not allowed to drive on Sunday. That is why several federal states are now making an exception. Bavaria allows the journeys from the weekend onwards. The gauge at Kaub on the Rhine shows only 17 centimetres. That is very little. The lorries now carry a lot of goods.

In Germany, large lorries are normally not allowed to drive on Sundays and public holidays. Because of the long drought, however, more and more federal states are now making an exception. Bavaria, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Baden-Württemberg are suspending the driving ban from next weekend onwards. In North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland the easing already applies.

The reason for this lies with the rivers. The Rhine and the Elbe are carrying as little water as rarely before. Ships can therefore only take part of their usual cargo. Transport becomes more expensive, and some of the goods move from the water to the road. Bavaria's interior minister Joachim Herrmann explains this by saying that raw materials, chemicals and energy sources must keep arriving.

The Kaub gauge between Koblenz and Mainz shows how serious the situation is. The reading there was recently 17 centimetres. The lowest level known so far was 25 centimetres in 2018. Experts think it possible that the Rhine will soon no longer be navigable along its whole length.

The readings are falling on the Elbe as well. In Magdeburg 41 centimetres were measured, four centimetres less than at the previous low of 2019. Behind the drought lies a hot summer: June and July were warmer in Western Europe than ever before. Heavy rain is not in sight for the time being.

Not all federal states are going along with it. Saxony rejects a general easing and points to permits granted case by case. There is criticism too: more lorries mean more traffic on the motorways.
